Suzuki's top rider suffers rough get off on Saturday, vows to return this weekend

ANAHEIM, Calif., (Feb. 23, 2004) - Team Suzuki's Nick Wey, who finished fourth overall in the THQ/AMA Supercross Series 250cc class points chase last year, suffered a scary crash on Saturday night in Minneapolis and was unable to complete the main event.

"Yeah, I cased a tall jump and caught my front wheel on the next bump - got pitched down to the cement," said Wey. "I was coughing up a bit of blood, likely because of a bruised lung. My shoulder and arm are sore, but I'm sure I'll be all right for this weekend."

And when asked if he went to get any X-rays, the resilient Wey said "They (track officials) wanted to take me to the hospital, but I wasn't having it." Wey then walked off the track under his own power.

Suzuki's top placing rider all year long, Wey's currently sitting in 7th place overall in the 250 class after his 20th place finish on Saturday. Wey is banking on the speed and consistency that he's know for to help him climb back up into the top five in the standings as we've just entered the midway point of the '04 season.

"I feel like I've fallen short of my goals for the first half of the year," said Wey. "I'll get myself feeling better this week and get after it this weekend."

When asked if he'd be riding the Suzuki test track at all prior to this weekend's race in Atlanta, Wey said "I don't know. We'll play it by ear."
