Nick Wey Takes 2nd at the U.S. Open

10/15/2004

Anaheim, Calif., (October 12, 2004) MDK Motorsports’ Nick Wey served up a bit of poetic justice at the US Open this past weekend, beating a field of factory pilots in his first race with his new team. Wey put on his usual consistently masterful supercross performance that would gain him the No. 2 spot on the overall podium.

The consistently fast Wey took little time to adapt to the CR250R, racing to fourth place finishes in both his Friday and Saturday qualifiers. In the mains he battled back from a crash on Friday to salvage a fifth – then raced to a second place finish on Saturday for second overall on the weekend.

“I can’t tell you how happy I am to do this well,” said Wey. “I’ve had a difficult time these past few months trying to understand what was happening with my ride situation. Well, MDK Motorsports answered that and I couldn’t be happier than to provide them with a second-place overall podium finish in our very first race.”

En-route to his second place overall finish in the 250 class, Wey straight up topped factory rivals such as Sebastien Tortelli (Suzuki) and Ernesto Fonseca (Honda).

“This couldn’t have felt quite as good had I had the advantage of factory backing,” said Wey. “So to do this on the equipment I had, for MDK Motorsports, made it that much more special. Now I’m just looking forward to getting started with the World Supercross races and then Anaheim 1, continue to put up the strong numbers in the 250 class that I have over the past several years.”

"This was an outstanding weekend for everyone at MDK Motorsports," said Mark Kvamme, owner of MDK Motorsports. "I am incredibly proud of Nick and the efforts of everyone on the MDK team. This podium finish is a testament to the hard work and intense dedication that Nick has shown and you can certainly expect great things from MDK in January."

Wey and MDK Motorsports get back to action at Toronto’s Skydome (Dec. 4) with the opening round of the World Supercross Series.
