Yamaha’s Chad Reed on podium for seventh time in eight
races while MDK Motorsports’ Wey turns in another great performance
CARLSBAD,
Calif., (March 6, 2006) – Unbound Energy-backed Chad Reed
(Yamaha) put on a patient, yet ultra-fast charge towards the end of the AMA
Supercross class main event on Saturday at Indianapolis’ RCA Dome, eventually
reeling in and catching another Unbound ‘energize’ racer, Nick Wey, to put
himself on the podium and preserve his points lead in the premier class of the
2006 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series.
Reed, who started out in sixth place after the
first lap, caught Wey – who was running in third place – on lap 13. Reed then
settled into third place, behind Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart to make the
podium and maintain his points lead over Carmichael, which stands at 191-190
just past the midway point of the season.
“I thought I raced pretty well tonight,”
said Reed. “I’d have like to have gotten a better start, but was able to make
up a number of spots towards the end there. Nick (Wey) was riding real well.
Good to see another Unbound-backed rider up there near the podium.”
Both Wey and Reed got out of their heat
races with relative ease – Reed finishing second in the first heat race with
Wey a couple spots behind in fourth. In the main event Wey pulled an excellent
start – one of his best of the year – and was in third place for the majority
of the race before yielding to two factory bikes late in the contest. Still,
Wey was able to top no less than three factory-backed riders on the night,
including Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca and Travis Preston, along with Kawasaki’s
Michael Byrne.
“The start was definitely key,” said Wey.
“And I tried my best to hold off Ivan (Tedesco) there at the end, but he was
able to get by me with a couple laps to go. Had nothing to do with my
conditioning, though. My trainer, RL (Randy Lawrence), has me in about as good
of shape as I’ve been in. Just made a couple minor mistakes and Ivan was able
to get by. I look forward to getting right back after it this weekend in
Daytona.”
For the Unbound Energy-backed Moto XXX
squad it was Tim “Red Dog” Ferry that provided the highlights at Indy. Ferry
rallied from a poor showing in the first heat race (18th) to grab a
podium (2nd) in his semi and raced to a solid 9th place
finish in the main. Teammate Kyle Lewis didn’t have that great of a night,
finishing 21st in the first heat race, 17th in the first
semi and recorded a DNS in the LCQ.
The Unbound-backed racers return to action
this weekend when Round Ten of the 2006 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series
heads back south to the Daytona International Speedway. Note: This is the only
Friday (March 10th) race of the season. Action gets underway at 7:30
p.m.
Unbound Energy is available in 16 oz. cans
