Second-straight
main event holeshot put Wey up front, and he makes it stick this time!
CARLSBAD,
Calif., (Jan. 22, 2007) – With another rocket ship start on his MDK
Motorsports-tuned Honda CRF450R, Nick Wey pulled the $1,500 Progressive Direct
Holeshot and, more importantly, made his lead stick as he went on to his first
podium finish of the season this past Saturday at Anaheim’s (Calif.) Angels
Stadium.
Wey,
who vaulted from 6th to 4th in the overall AMA Supercross class points, was
getting all Kinds of props from longtime competitor and former Pro
Circuit/Kawasaki teammate, Ricky Carmichael. “That guy’s got some talent,” said
RC of Wey. Carmichael was up in the CBS Sports booth as guest commentator when he
commented on Wey during his heat race, foreshadowing Wey’s podium performance
in the main event.
Battling
a nagging upper body muscle injury, Wey soldiered through the pain again this
week and put up by far his best result of the young supercross season.
“Last
week didn’t go as planned and I was real determined to do better at Anaheim 2,”
said Wey from the podium. “I’m pumped to get my team a trophy.”
Wey
made the main event by virtue of a 3rd place finish in heat race No. 2. He then
took that momentum directly to the start of the main event and pulled a
seemingly improbably holeshot from way outside on the start gate.
“I
got a good tip from (Ryan) Villopoto and it paid off,” said Wey on his start.
Noteworthy: Wey and Villopoto, the Anaheim 2 Lites class winner, share the same
trainer, Randy Lawrence.
In
the main Wey held off eventual winner James Stewart through the first lap, then
seceded 2nd place to Chad Reed on lap eight. But those two former champions
(Stewart SX GP, Reed AMA SX) would be all the ground Wey would give up as he stayed
on the gas all the way to the podium checkers.
Again,
with his podium finish at Anaheim 2, Wey moved up two spots in the overall AMA
Supercross class points standings - from 6th to 4th, four points off the
overall podium behind Tim Ferry (50-46).
This
weekend Wey remains in California for Round Four of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA
Supercross Series, set for San Francisco’s SBC Park (Jan. 27). Last year in San
Francisco Wey finished on the podium in 3rd overall.
